Teachers will be able to book new workshops and activities as part of a new Learning Programme at the RAF Museum in Colindale, London.

A new learning programme has been launched at the RAF Museum in London

Covering a vast range of the Curriculum from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 5 and beyond, the coming school year will see an increase in the number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sessions on offer.

The award-winning RAF Museum reopens on Saturday 30th June following a major transformation featuring new galleries, green spaces, a children’s playground and new restaurant. It’s the only place in London where visitors can test their flying skills, explore RAF stories, sit inside an iconic cockpit and enjoy a picnic, all in one day.

Learning Programme

A number of new sessions will be launched from September including the following:

Key Stage 1 students can explore the use of everyday materials in early flying machines in the Magnificent Materials workshop, while Key Stage 2 pupils can get hands-on with coding in Pilot Skills: do you have what it takes to be an RAF pilot.

For Secondary Schools, the Under Pressure workshop for KS3 students explores atmospheric pressure, forces and motions to help answer the question ‘How do pilots stay live in the air’.

The museum offers teachers a number of pre and post-visit resources and self-guided visits are also available for school trips.

New at the museum

A giant interactive debating table will allow students (upper KS3 and above) to take part in a facilitated debate on artificial intelligence.

Sarah Castle, learning partnerships manager, said: “We are very excited to offer a refreshed and revitalised learning programme which retains the perennial favourites whilst introducing new workshops and activities with a STEM focus.

“See our collections differently and find new curriculum links which make a day out at the museum a relevant and memorable experience for you and your students.”

RAF Centenary

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force, a milestone which will be marked by special events and activities. There are a number of new exhibitions opening at the transformed site later this month which bring to life the history of the RAF and its journey.
