Astronomers Take Over will offer an alternative planetarium experience.

Set to open on 27th March, Astronomers Take Over will provide opportunities to meet Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomers, take part in science demonstrations and ask questions about space and astronomy.

A range of astronomer-led shows will take place in a planetarium within the gallery. Animals in Space! (age 1-7) will look at the contributions and influences of animals, from the space race to what we see in the stars, The Night Sky (age 7+) will provide a classic guide to the cosmos and Solar System Sightseeing (age 7+) is an introduction to the stars and planets.

In addition to the interactive elements, the gallery features interviews with experts, including a visual artist and astrophotographer. Professor Sanjeev Gupta who will share his work on some of humankind’s most amazing space missions and curator Dr Louise Devoy will explore the history of the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Pupils can travel the world through art at the National Maritime Museum, exploring everywhere from the icy Arctic to the Pacific islands.

A scavenger hunt will take visitors on a trail to discover some of the most weird and wonderful items that astronauts have taken into space including a gorilla suit, Luke Skywalker’s light sabre and an espresso machine.

Elizabeth Avery, head of astronomy at Royal Observatory Greenwich said: “Astronomers Take Over is an incredible opportunity to meet the Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomy team and try something different.  We are very excited to share what we have been working on with our visitors and have some science fun together.”

Science theatre show

From 3rd April, the gallery will be accompanied by a science theatre show, Unboxing the Universe. The show will feature demonstrations, experiments and hands-on audience activities.

Unboxing the Universe will be led by a member of the astronomy team and will encourage critical thinking and pupil-led questioning.
