Schools located near a canal or waterway can apply for a free Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) membership for access to training, support and more.

The partnership, between CLOtC and the Canal & River Trust has been funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and is designed to make outdoor learning more accessible, practical, and impactful for pupils of all ages.
There are 100 memberships available to schools who meet the requirements and places will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.
Dr Anne Hunt, CEO of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom charity, said: “Thanks to the generous support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery and our partners at Canal & River Trust, we’re delighted to offer 100 free memberships to schools and educational settings near canals and waterways.

About the Canal & River Trust
The trust looks after a 2,000-mile network of canals and rivers, everything from culverts and reservoirs to bridges, locks and towpaths.
It has a range of learning programmes to develop knowledge and skillsets as well as allowing them access to the health and wellbeing benefits that are brought about by outdoor and experiential learning.
Enhancing learning outside the classroom
From science investigations along a canal bank to creative writing inspired by natural surroundings, local waterways provide rich, real-world contexts that deepen engagement and understanding.
However, many schools face barriers to getting started with these experiences, from lack of confidence to limited resources. CLOtC membership is designed to remove those barriers, equipping staff with the tools, training, and inspiration needed to make the most of their local environment.
