National charity seeks additional funding to help more schools access learning opportunities beyond the classroom that build confidence and life skills in young people
The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) has warned that children are missing out on opportunities proven to boost wellbeing, achievement, and life skills.
Dr Anne Hunt, CEO of CLOtC, said: “We believe that every child, no matter their background, should have the chance to learn in ways that spark curiosity, build confidence, and prepare them for life.
“LOtC can make a lasting difference on young people, their families, and entire communities.”
CLOtC’s mission to support schools
The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom is a national charity that champions all learning that happens beyond the classroom, supporting schools and providers to deliver high-quality learning outside the classroom (LOtC).
It runs the LOtC Quality Badge scheme, which is endorsed by English and Welsh governments, to recognise providers who offer safe, effective and meaningful learning experiences.
Crowdfunding for much-needed support
CLOtC has launched the crowdfunding campaign so it can help to provide free support to schools who need it the most, offering CPD, training and resources for staff to support them in developing their LOtC. In addition, the donations will help the charity continue to operate the LOtC Quality Badge.
“Being awarded the LOtC Quality Badge for our educational workshops and school residentials, provides teachers with the trust and reassurance they need when booking”, Laura Storey, head of marketing at LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, said.
She added that “the standards and framework provided by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom means we consistently review our standards and best practices to provide an exemplary service”.
Ways to support the campaign
CLOtC is calling on individuals, businesses, and funders to support its work:
- £120 gives a whole school access to online CPD and training – to help schools take more of their learning beyond the classroom.
- £1,200 gives ten schools access to online training and support – to help them embed LOtC in their whole school practice.
- £2,500 supports every LOtC Quality Badge applicant with additional, expert safeguarding support.
Donations of £3,000+ can receive public recognition, including a listing on the CLOtC website and social media acknowledgement.
Government recognition of learning outside the classroom
Catherine McKinnell MP, Minister for School Standards, said: “I welcome all the work that the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom does supporting schools on quality assurance for safe and effective activities delivered by outside organisations.
“As well as the potential to support educational outcomes, well planned visits can also help children and young people to gain new skills, strengthen their sense of school belonging, and promote good wellbeing, supporting them to thrive.”
