Special school viewings confirmed for Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre

Date Posted: 06/04/2018

A pop-up Shakespearean Theatre will make its debut in the historic city of York this summer, and performances specifically for schools will be available.

Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will host a ‘summer of Shakespeare’, with tickets now on sale for four major productions: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Richard III.

The season, running from 25th June until 2nd September, will be performed in repertory by two companies of actors.

School sessions

Nine performances have been scheduled exclusively for schools on selected dates between 2nd and 18th July.

These morning performances start at 11am, and the cost is £10 per ticket anywhere in the theatre, on a first come first served basis. Plus one staff member goes free with every ten children.

Teachers may also like to take advantage of opportunities for question and answer sessions with some of the creatives, cast and crew after the performance.

There is the alternative option for school groups to attend public performances across the season at a reduced price.

Planning and queries should be directed to Chloe Barr at Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, organisers of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, on 01653-619169 or info@shakespearesrosetheatre.com.

More about the pop-up theatre

Situated beside the iconic York landmark of Clifford’s Tower, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will combine ‘state-of-the-art scaffolding technology’, corrugated iron and timber with the historic 13-sided design of a 16th century Shakespearean theatre.

It will house an audience of 950, with 600 seated on three tiered balconies around an open-roofed courtyard and standing room for 350 ‘groundlings’.

Originator of the project and CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, James Cundall said: “In Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre an experience every bit as exciting, intimate and immersive will be offered to today’s audiences in a dramatic playhouse setting beside the iconic 13th century Clifford’s Tower in the heart of the historic city of York.”
