Blaise Castle offers schools Victorian Christmas

Date Posted: 19/09/2017

Blaise Castle House Museum, part of Bristol Museums, will offer classes the chance to explore yuletide traditions and customs of a Victorian Christmas this festive season, through a series of interactive activities.

Running from 16th November to 14th December, Victorian Christmas will welcome classes from Year 1 to 4.

About the workshops

Pupils taking part in Victorian Christmas will have the opportunity engage in a variety of festive role-playing games, object handling and discovery activities, each with a Victorian twist.

Students will handle real and replica Victorian artefacts, as well as create a Christmas table decoration to take home.

In addition, they will learn about traditional Victorian Christmas meals and identify festive spices used in cooking, while learning the significance of, and practice singing, Victorian carols.

The workshops last for 90 minutes and are suitable for group sizes of up to 35 pupils, although you can book more than one session.

Blaise Castle House Museum encourages teachers and pupils to come dressed as Victorian servants, with boys/men dressed in a plain shirt, short or knee length trousers, waistcoat and cap, and girls/women dressed in knee or full length dress or skirt and plain top, pinafore or apron, shawl, hat or headscarf.

Booking sessions

There is a limited number of Victorian Christmas school workshops available this festive season, which will take place on Thursdays and Fridays between 16th November and 14th December; therefore teachers should make sure to book well in advance.

There are two sessions available at 11am until 12.30pm and at 12.30pm until 1pm.

The required ratio is one adult for every six pupils, who will work in four groups. Each group requires support from at least one adult.

In addition, the school lunch room is available by prior arrangement and is free for schools booking workshops.
