Arboretum to host Thank You Youth Festival for KS3 & 4

The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire has invited young people from schools across the country to attend a full day of free workshops on 11th July.

The event, called the Thank You Youth Festival, will provide cross-curricular workshops exploring the legacy of the World War One generation. Funding for the event has been provided by The Royal British Legion as part of its 2018 Thank You movement.

Sarah Oakden, head of marketing at the National Memorial Arboretum, said: “Young people have the opportunity to engage in this exciting programme of workshops as we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War. Part of the ambition of Thank You is making Remembrance understood and passed on to the next generation.

“These cross-curricular activities have been designed to complement the work that students are doing at school in a range of subjects. It will give them the opportunity to say thank you for the sacrifices and example of those who lived through the conflict, as they learn about the radical social and technological changes that took place during this key period in our country’s history.”

The cross-curricular workshops will cover a variety of subjects, including History, English, Music, STEM, PE, Geography, Diversity, and Art. Participating schools will be able to compile a day of up to four hours of sessions to create a customised programme of activities for their young people that will conclude with an end of day gathering.

The workshops will be a mixture of facilitated and self-led, with each school being expected to select at least one self-led activity. School staff will be required to remain with students always, even during facilitated activities.

Coach bursaries are also being made available to support schools with transport costs. Schools can apply for a bursary for the cost of one coach for up to 50 students.

Schools interested in participating need to book by 27th April by contacting the group bookings team on 01283-245143.

Places, bursaries and workshops will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and confirmations will be sent to schools in early May. Schools are encouraged to complete applications as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
