Win a school trip to Buckingham Palace by making a cake

Date Posted: 29/03/2016

Students have the opportunity to win a school trip to Buckingham Palace by entering a birthday cake making competition to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The competition has been organised by Love British Food, a small independent organisation that educates about the benefits of buying British produce.

Schools are invited to join in the national celebrations for the Queen’s birthday by creating a birthday cake. Photos of the top five winning cakes will be made into a montage and presented to the Queen as a birthday souvenir.

The winning school will be treated to an exclusive trip to Buckingham Palace during British Food Fortnight that will take place from 17th September to 2nd October.

Competition rules

Each birthday cake must be decorated fit for a royal to eat, and must also be made with healthy ingredients. Locally sourced products used in the cake are also a bonus.

The contest, while offering schools the chance to visit the palace, is also an opportunity for children to learn about healthy living, and what ingredients they can use as alternatives to sugar and margarine.

How to enter

The cake making competition is open to both Primary and Secondary school students. To enter, children should:

1. Adapt a traditional cake recipe using healthy and/or local ingredients, or create their own new recipe.

2. Bake and decorate the cake in a manner fit for the Queen.

3. Share and eat the cake. Teachers are encouraged to organise a royal birthday party, during which the cake will be eaten. Students could dress up for the party in fancy dress, themed to commemorate different features of the Queen’s reign; i.e. The Queen as a child, her wedding, her Coronation, or her love of corgis.

4. Send five photos of the cake, of the children making it, and their royal birthday party, plus a description of the recipe and ingredients used and how and why the students adapted it.

Teachers should send photos and a description of the baking process to info@lovebritishfood.co.uk by 15th July. The winners will be notified during the week commencing 18th July.
