School trip organisers arranging a visit to Portsmouth this year will be able to join in commemorating the centenary of World War One and the 70th anniversary of D-Day with a programme of special events and exhibitions from 10th March.

As part of the 2014 World War One Centenary programme, highlights are set to include:

A selection of World War One events and exhibitions:

•    A remembrance event in the Guildhall Square on 4th August to commemorate the declaration of war.

•    Portsmouth City Museum will be staging a new temporary exhibition, Lest We Forget, in its ground floor gallery from June to November displaying World War One artefacts and archive material from its collections.

•    Scheduled to open in the spring, HMS – Hear My Story is a major multi-million pound exhibition situated in the new Babcock Galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

HMS – Hear My Story will tell the undiscovered stories from ordinary men, women and ships which have shaped the Navy’s amazing history over the last 100 years and impacted on all our lives.

From 3rd to 8th June, Portsmouth will mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day with the following:

•    On 5th June a parade of serving armed forces personnel, veterans and cadets will march along the seafront to Southsea Common for the Drumhead Ceremony, a multi-faith service remembering those who lost their lives during the D-Day landings. The day will finish with a Sunset Concert for Heroes.

•    On the actual anniversary, 6th June, there will be a Remembrance Service at the D-Day Memorial Stone in Southsea.

•    7th and 8th June will be a weekend of entertainment and activities for all group members, featuring military displays, re-enactments and live music from the 1940s.

Other special events will include a photographic exhibition of Portsmouth and the surrounding area as it was in the build up to D-Day and an informal afternoon session with X-Craft veterans and residents.
