The Charterhouse.

The Charterhouse has developed a new programme for schools, in consultation with the Museum of London, offering students of all ages the opportunity to engage with the story of London.

It includes a range of sessions for primary, secondary and A-Level students, incorporating a cross-curricular approach with themes linked to History, Art, English and Religious Education.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Opening to pupils for the first time in almost 700 years, the Charterhouse’s workshops tell the stories of the Black Death, The English Reformation and Tudor / Elizabethan London.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils can join the Charterhouse Now and Then session and discover the place’s history, while during the Fit for a Queen costumed interpreter-led session, they will meet Queen Elizabeth I.

Key Stage 2 students can also opt for the Tracing the Past session, during which they will search the Charterhouse for evidence of key people linked to history, while at the Black Death workshop, they can explore one of London’s only surviving plague pits.

Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

Secondary school pupils can examine the English Reformation, before debating the arguments at the Museum of London, in Henry VIII’s London session, while they can investigate the Black Death at the Charterhouse and London Metropolitan Archives during Recording the Past: The Black Death workshop.

For pupils interested in shifts in power, the People and Power session might also be suitable, and during the People and Protest workshop, they will compare medieval protests in relation to the dissolution of the monasteries, before staging an onsite protest.

About the Charterhouse

The Charterhouse’s was built in 1371 as a Carthusian monastery, while with the dissolution of the monasteries, the Charterhouse became a mansion for wealthy noblemen and a refuge for royalty.

Working in partnership with the Museum of London, the Revealing the Charterhouse project saw the creation of a new museum, public square and the Sir John Cass’s Foundation Learning Centre.
