Superhero-themed Science workshops at The Deep

Date Posted: 03/03/2016

The Deep aquarium in Hull is offering some new superhero-themed workshops in March and April as part of its March into Science programme.

The school programme encompasses seven weeks of Science-themed activities for school groups and families.

These activities include taking part in a superhero trail, watching a Science entertainer show, and learning about The Deep’s conservation work.

The superhero workshops are available from now until 15th March – there are still places left – and between 4th and 17th April for teachers who need a little more planning time.

Super animals!
Key Stage 3

During this workshop, students will investigate the extreme adaptations of some of the animals at The Deep, including spiders and snakes.

Pupils are encouraged to consider why these animals have certain abilities, and get to handle live cockroaches as part of their investigation.

Children will look at how animal features translate into superhero powers, and decide which animal would prove the strongest in a struggle for survival.

A Key Stage 2 version of this workshop, titled Amazing Animal Adaptation, is available as well.

Find a secret superhero
Foundation and Key Stage 1

During this workshop, younger students will learn about where the Amazon River meets the ocean.

Pupils will discover the creatures that are unlikely super heroes and identify the special skills that help them survive in their habitat.

This workshop includes the pupils meeting live animals to discover how some creatures adapt for harsh environments.

School trip information

All workshops last around 40 minutes and give children an insight into the marine world.

School visits cost £6 per pupil; this covers a workshop of choice and entry into the attraction.

Teachers can also opt for their class to take a tour of The Deep, during which the class will see a coral reef, a slime exhibition, and a number of sharks in the Endless Oceans area.
