Space workshop at Eureka!

Eureka! The National Children's Museum in West Yorkshire has launched space-themed workshops for Key Stage 1 and 2 students to tie in with Tim Peake’s recent mission to the International Space Station.

Each session includes a show and a workshop, and teachers can download a Key Stage-specific work pack to accompany their visit to the museum.

Destination Space: Key Stage 1 workshop

The workshop will allow students to explore what life is like for the entire space crew of scientists, engineers, trainers and astronauts with a space-filled school workshop for five to seven year olds.

From launching rockets, docking at the International Space Station and tackling emergency challenges, the session offers insight and learnings into what you need to undertake a space mission.

Workshop activities include learning about roles in the space crew, rocket launches, space suit materials, and daily life for astronauts on the ISS.

Destination Space: Key Stage 2 workshop

Space exploration requires a whole field of experts, and aimed at seven to 11 year olds, this workshop ‘recruits’ and ‘trains’ the next generation of space explorers.

Featuring experiments, investigations and problem-solving activities linked back to human space flight, the workshops aim to leave young crew members inspired by the realities of space travel.

Workshop activities encompass all of those included in the Key Stage 1 workshop, plus resistance training, disorientation training, effects of vacuums on liquid, use of robotics and problem solving with simulated mission activities.

More at Eureka!

Teachers who would like to extend a Primary school visit to the museum can lead their students on a gallery visit.

There are six themed galleries within the attraction, and students can step inside giant body parts, experience the world of work in a bank, garage, and shop, and even chat to a robot.

Gallery visits include a focused hour in one of the galleries – ideal for exploring a specific curriculum topic – and an hour to explore the museum freely.
