Sailing exhibition documents ship building

Date Posted: 05/09/2013

From the Loft Floor, opening at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth on 16th September, features illustrations by local artist Anna Cattermole documenting the work of a team of ship builders.

Luke Powell of Working Sail specialise in building traditional wooden pilot cutters. From the Loft Floor provides an insight into the construction of the vessels, which plied their trade around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly during the latter half of the 19th century.

Anna’s drawings, produced on location in the boatyard, record the traditional methods and materials used and the skills and knowledge of those involved.

The art work is also supported by a display of models, documentary film footage and traditional tools from the museum’s collection and on special loan.

Anna says: “All these reportage drawings were made on the spot, while I sat for hours at a time in the rain, snow and sun.”

From the Loft Floor will run until 13th January. Teachers can visit the museum for a free familiarisation visit with the education manager prior to a school trip.
