Royal Shakespeare Company offers CPD workshops

Date Posted: 08/05/2018

Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) provides teachers with CPD workshops running alongside two of its productions, Matilda The Musical and Macbeth.

RSC Education works with schools and teachers and offers an ongoing programme of both set and bespoke courses and events, as well as two new CPD courses for teachers.

Teaching Macbeth at Key Stage 2

This one day course is an introduction to teaching Macbeth using RSC methods. The course presents a wealth of ideas on how to approach and progress understanding of the play, for classroom study, or to prepare students for a theatre visit.

The focus is on developing knowledge, confidence and skills to use the techniques that RSC actors use in the rehearsal room to teach this play in a classroom setting.

The day will include:

Building the foundations: introduction to RSC ‘rehearsal room’ techniques that will ensure your students are ready to engage with Shakespeare’s plays

Creating the world of the play: ways of introducing or building existing knowledge of the play

Close reading/analysis of particular speeches or scenes

Exploring the language: ways of helping pupils to access Shakespeare’s language

Practical advice around transferability of approaches to other plays

Ideas on adapting approaches to different classroom or learning spaces.

The course is ideal for KS2 teachers and will take place on 19th July 2018.

Literacy courses for teachers with Matilda The Musical

To accompany the first national tour of the RSC’s production of Matilda The Musical, RSC Education is offering a series of two-day Literacy courses for teachers.

Using approaches adapted from the work of RSC’s actors, the course will examine how to use these techniques to bring Matilda The Musical to life in your classroom and use it as a springboard for developing vocabulary and Creative Writing.

The courses will take place at the Clore Learning Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon on the following dates:

Friday 8th June and Saturday 9th June 2018, 10am-4pm

Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November 2018, 10am-4pm

Friday 15th March and Saturday 16th March 2019, 10am-4pm
