Between September and December, Key Stages 3 and 4 school groups can choose from eight theatres to see Lisa Evans’ UK tour of Rise Up, including the Pegasus Theatre in Oxford and the Mumford Theatre in Cambridge.

The play sees four performers tell the stories of the Freedom Riders - principled citizens riding buses across Alabama and Mississippi - and draws attention to both the illegal discrimination of the American sixties, and the bravery of those who resisted it.

Optional resources

Organisers taking a group to see Rise Up can use whiteboard friendly resources, including a session plan for drama lessons to encompass monologue development, spoken word, and character back story, as well as exploring ideas around territory and segregation, and writing a review.

You can also find information on the historical background of the play, including profiles of some of the riders, and a synopsis breakdown of the plot.

• Redbridge Drama Centre, London: 17th - 18th September
• Pegasus Theatre, Oxford: 25th September
• Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead: 29th September
