Paignton Zoo offers accredited science activities to schools

Date Posted: 09/01/2014

Paignton Zoo in Devon has become the first place in the southwest to offer CREST Discovery Award accredited Science activities to schools.

The zoo is now providing workshops on animal behaviour and environmental enrichment with CREST Award accreditation.

The national CREST Awards recognise Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths project work.

Paignton Zoo educator Michelle Bales (pictured) commented: “This is a regional first – we are the only zoo outside London to have accredited their activities through CREST. Fewer than 50 schemes nationally are accredited in this way at the moment.”

The zoo is one of the first schemes to be accredited for the new CREST Discovery Award level.

The zoo’s Discovery Award-concentrating on animal behaviour - can be completed in a single school visit, while the Bronze Award (about environmental enrichment for zoo animals) is completed both on –site on school premises and in the zoo.

School trip organisers are able to book workshops with Paignton Zoo’s education team now.
