New giraffe enclosure at ZSL Whipsnade

Date Posted: 27/12/2013

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has celebrated its newest animal arrival with the opening of a new giraffe enclosure.

The new Giraffe Heights enclosure includes a revamped barn to keep its recently born female giraffe warm, and a nine-foot-high viewing platform which brings visitors face-to-face with Whipsnade’s giraffes for the very first time.

The new calf, who will be named by zoo visitors, will share the enclosure with the rest of the herd, including half-brother Jengo, aged one, and aunties, Ijuma and Ina.

The platform will allow up to 300 people at a time to see the zoo’s reticulated giraffes, with views across the entire paddock and into the newly extended giraffe barn.

Daily talks on the viewing platform will give school groups an insight into the lives of the zoo's tallest residents, revealing fun facts including why they have such long necks.

School trip organisers purchasing tickets to Whipsnade Zoo are entitled to free admission for one adult for every ten secondary pupils or every six primary pupils.
