The River and Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames has revealed a new Art workshop, suitable for Key Stages 1 to 4.

River %26 Rowing Museum

The new workshop, titled Matisse: Drawing with Scissors and Colour, can be adapted for all ages, and is available to book between 15th October and 2nd January.

The workshop has been created to accompany a temporary exhibition from the Haywood Touring Southbank Centre called Matisse: Drawing with Scissors.

Students taking part in the workshops will get to learn about screen printing, drawing and creative colour collage, in order to explore the abstract human form.

The students will combine print making and collage inspired by the works on display in the temporary exhibition. They will be encouraged to ‘take their scissors for a walk’ and cut freehand motifs and produce creative compositions with strong, bold shape and design.

Students will also explore the work of artists in the museum’s permanent collection who were inspired by Matisse and who represent the whole or part of the human figure with abstract simplicity.

Other workshops

The River and Rowing Museum boasts a number of workshops in subjects such as Science, Geography and History.

Examples include Paint Me a River, another Art workshop where students will create paintings or screen prints inspired by the Thames.

There is also a Science workshop called The River of Life. This session focuses on plants, animals and their habitats in the river environment.

Other workshops include a Wind in the Willows English session, during which a class will connect the novels’ characters with real habitats and wildlife, and Row to Rio, a session that looks at what it takes to be an Olympic rower and investigates the geography of Brazil.
