Maths at Oxford Castle Unlocked

Date Posted: 17/01/2015

The 1,000 year castle in Oxford will be offering school trips linked to Key Stage 2 Maths from spring.

Oxford Castle Unlocked lends itself easily to History trips. From spring, though, it will be offering Key Stage 2 maths teachers a helping hand by launching a self-led Maths activity pack.

The Medieval Maths activity packs encompass a selection of practical applications of arithmetic and measuring skills.

Pupils will be challenged to discover how many arrows an archer would fire in a minute whilst defending the castle and explore how far castle character Empress Matilda might have dug if she tunnelled her way out of the Saxon Tower.

The best bit is, the Maths pack can be added onto a school trip package for no extra cost when schools book a tour and workshop at the attraction.

Lisa Price, learning and access officer at Oxford Castle Unlocked, commented: “Often, we find that our tour and workshop combination takes up half a day of a school trip so we have launched our maths activity packs which enable classes to stay the whole day and enjoy an enriching experience across a selection of topics.”
