A recent teacher takeover event took place at M Shed, in Bristol, and highlighted the benefits of schools visiting the attraction.

M Shed

The teacher takeover, which took place on 26th June, not only marked the museum’s 6th anniversary but also acted as an opportunity for teachers all over Bristol and the surrounding areas to go behind the scenes of the museum and discover what it has to offer educationally.

Teachers were invited to join the Formal Learning Team at M Shed for a fun and informal event, which included road-testing new gallery learning resources.

Why visit M Shed?

Various workshops are available for schools and can tie in with the History curriculum, such as the workshops covering topics like Ships and Sailors, World War One and World War Two, as well as Bristol and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

All workshops are designed to incorporate object handling, costumed role-play, ‘meet the expert’ opportunities, special gallery activities, storytelling and tours,  and all are tailored to age and curriculum needs.

M Shed

M Shed is part of a group of museums in Bristol. It focuses on the history of the city and the people and cultures within it.

Bristol Museums’ formal learning manager, Jane Hack said: “The Teacher Takeover at M Shed was a really enjoyable afternoon and a lovely way to celebrate the museum’s 6th Birthday. Teachers had a behind the scenes experience, testing out new gallery resources and trails when the museum was closed to the public. They handled museum objects, dressed up as their favourite Bristolian and took part in a Bristol themed quiz. Our learning team was also at hand to discuss curriculum needs and talk about the school workshops and in-school assemblies we offer.”

In addition to M Shed’s local history programme, the museum also delivers learning activities at four other museums in Bristol: Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Blaise Castle House Museum, The Red Lodge Museum and The Georgian House Museum. School visits are also available at Bristol Archives and Kings Weston Roman Villa.
