The Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh will host the Knitting & Stitching Show from 28th April to 1st May, offering opportunities for Fashion and Textiles students.

Teachers interested in taking a class to the event can involve students in a selection of workshops, as well as watch demonstrations and get involved in hands-on workshops covering many aspects of textile craft.

Suitable for Key Stage 4 students, the Knitting & Stitching Show will cover a variety of skills relating to the subject of Fashion from dressmaking and embroidery to lacemaking, beadwork, spinning and dying.

Students can also learn about patchwork, quilting, knitting and crochet, as well as felt making, tapestry creation and home furnishings.

Textile galleries

The show will present eight professionally curated textile galleries; featuring artists such as Edinburgh-based tapestry artist Fiona Rutherford and Glasgow-based printed textile artist and designer Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor.

Other experts due to display work include Aberdeen-based patchwork professional and quilter Hanne Asbey, and textile artist and painter Michala Gyetvai.

The Creative Living Theatre will offer free demonstrations on a wide array of different textile projects, so students can watch products being used live.

Plus students who are after supplies will find over 200 exhibitors at the show, selling everything from sewing machines and knitting supplies to yarn and material.

Educational workshops

Over the weekend, visitors can take part in various workshops. Examples include Drawing and Painting with Wool; Woven Tapestry: Working with Different Materials; Paint Your Own Threads for Stitching; and Learn to Crotchet for Beginners.

The Dressmaking Studio will also have a team of experts on hand to explain some of the basics of dressmaking, from buttonholes, hems and seam finishing to zip insertion and understanding patterns.

Teachers are advised to book for school groups ahead of visiting; 16 is the maximum number of people allowed in most sessions.
