Dylan Thomas opera premiered in Swansea

Date Posted: 23/12/2013

The world premiere of a new opera version of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood will open at the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea in April 2014 - the centenary year of Thomas’ birth.

Under Milk Wood was originally written as a radio play, and the opera production is billed as recognising this in performance, combining shared and private listening experiences for the audience.

The opera is composed by John Metcalf using Dylan Thomas’ original text of the radio play.

A company of eight singers and five instrumentalists will create Thomas’ world of Llareggub - the town that went mad. The production will be directed by Keith Turnbull, with music by Wyn Davies and design by Simon Banham.

Under Milk Wood: An Opera will visit the following venues:

•    Taliesin Arts Centre: 3rd - 5th April
•    Aberystwyth Arts Centre: 8th April
•    Sherman Cymru, Cardiff: 11th - 12th April
•    Galeri, Caernarfon: 15th April

School trip organisers should contact their chosen venue for group rates and discounts.
