School children at The British Museum

Dive into this selection of school trip workshops and education sessions that are new for the 2017/18 academic year and available to book now.

It's June and schools across the country are snowballing towards the end of another academic year.

Although many teachers just want to think about the summer holidays, there are others that will be eager to start planning their school trips for 2017/18.

With this in mind, we look at a few options for educational visits for the new school year that are available to book now.

The British Museum

The line-up of schools sessions at the British Museum for 2017/18 is diverse. Highlights include Sex and Relationship Education workshops for pupils in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. In these workshops students work with an artist educator and use British Museum objects to stimulate discussion.

Another top pick is the Around the World in a Day workshop for pupils in Year 5 and 6. This session gets students hands on with museum artefacts so they can compare and contrast cultures from around the world. Then there is the Citi Money Gallery session, in which students explore concepts relating to spending and the role of money in societies around the world.

NST

NST's range of school trips are now available to book for the 2017/18 academic year. A few tried and tested itineraries are available in the line-up, including London visits that take in destinations like The Natural History Museum, and include activities like a Thames River Cruise and a West End show.

Other highlights include a visit to Tudor World as part of a Stratford upon Avon itinerary, where children can put themselves in the place of Tudor locals. It includes doing activities like putting their feet up in a Tudor bed and sitting at a Tudor dining table. Other interesting options include a visit to Jorvik Dig, where pupils can learn how archaeologists used clues to piece together information about York's Viking past, and a trip to the Shipwreck Centre on the Isle of Wight.

The V&A

Both self-guided visits and guided tours and workshops are available to schools visiting the V&A in 2017/18. There's a list of options for both Primary and Secondary pupils covering subjects from Art & Design to History and English.

An example of a Primary workshop is the V&A Voyage, in which children explore clothes and religious artefacts from all around the world to learn about cultures. The list of Secondary workshops, meanwhile, features the likes of the brand new Design Prototyping Session, in which pupils research unique design solutions from the past before coming up with their own prototype for a modern day problem solving design.

The V&A will also be hosting a number of special events throughout the new academic year, too. These include a Winnie the Pooh celebration on World Book Day on 1st March 2018, and Careers Event for Secondary schools on 17th November.

Houses of Parliament

Parliament's Education Service is now taking bookings for 2017/18. Spaces fill up fast, so booking well ahead is advised. In autumn a range of tours will run and include the Adventurer's Tour, which is aimed at pupils aged seven to 11 with links to History and English curriculums. During this tour pupils learn about the ways in which democracy has been shaped over time. The session is delivered as a 'secret mission' for pupils.

The People's Parliament workshop is another option. This experience can be tailored to fit in with the History curriculum for pupils aged seven to 11, or the Citizenship curriculum for children aged 11 to 16. In this workshop pupils learn about the role that people power has played in the evolution of parliament, and also learn about the Suffragettes.
