Oh no he isn’t! Pantomime Workshops from MK Theatre

Date Posted: 06/11/2014

Men in tights and girls dressed as boys – the panto season is upon us and Milton Keynes Theatre has an idea to get your pupils interested in Drama.

MK Theatre’s Creative Learning department aims to educate and inspire young people in theatre and help teachers bring arts into the classroom by taking home some of its workshop ideas.

Pantomime is always a special time of year for the theatre; its foyer areas become themed, panto merchandise pops up, often its box office and front of house staff dress up, Christmas tunes are played everywhere and there’s a huge Christmas tree to boot.

If that’s not enough to pique your students’ interest, this year’s pantomime is Peter Pan and the theatre is offering pantomime-inspired drama workshops on weekday mornings throughout December and January 2015 in its backstage drama studio.

During the workshops children will explore the traditions of Panto, for example who stands where, popular panto sayings and where they came from like “It’s behind you!”

Children will explore popular panto characters - the goodies and baddies and panto dames, and learn about the slapstick comedy that forms the basis of a great pantomime.

Backstage tours - get to see the costumes up close

Teachers can also book a backstage tour before or after one of the panto workshops.

On tours you get to see all the theatre backstage areas including the costumes up close, the props, quick change areas, dressing rooms of the stars, the orchestra pit and at the same time learn all about how a show works behind the scenes.

After the tour and panto workshop you can arrange to see a matinee production of Peter Pan afterwards, all of which can be organised by the theatre’s Creative Learning department.
