Drama workshops to tie in with a theatre trip

Date Posted: 20/05/2015

Theatre Workout adds an educational element to a school trip to see a show.

Finding a reason to take your students to the theatre is easy, but creating lesson plans around that visit might not be so simple. Theatre Workout takes the hard work out of creating that post-visit study material, as it offers a selection of Drama workshops which incorporate a visit to a corresponding West End show.

Theatre Workout is a performer-led company working with a team of trained and experienced industry professionals. It includes West End performers plus actors, singers, dancers, directors and other theatre practitioners who are trained, DBS checked and insured.

Two new workshop programmes are now available for Bend it Like Beckham and Beautiful - The Carole King Musical. Options include:

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical

•    Educational Drama-based workshop exploring the show’s central themes, characters and story.
•    Musical Theatre workshops focusing on performance technique.
•    Song writing workshop exploring creativity and performance.

Bend it like Beckham

•    Educational Drama workshop exploring the show’s central themes, characters and story.
•    Musical Theatre workshops focusing on performance technique used by the cast in the creation of the show.

Other theatre production workshops that are currently on offer include the 39 Steps, Wicked, Cats, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Lion King and War Horse.

Bespoke Drama Workshops

Theatre Workout’s bespoke Drama workshops can be adapted for any school group and the play or musical of your choice. They offer a range of performance techniques and are designed to complement your in-school classes. For example:

Acting for Theatre

Acting is at the heart of all theatre and performance techniques, so Theatre Workout Education offers a range of acting masterclasses to cover all the main philosophies and styles of acting technique.

A standard masterclass explores contrasting techniques used in classical theatre, drawing inspiration from the main 20th century practitioners including Stanislavsky, Brecht, Meisner, Artaud, Grotowski and more.

Acting workshops can be tailored to any production of your choice to relate techniques to the characters, themes and genre of that production.

Devising and Physical Theatre

Devising and Physical Theatre masterclasses explore contemporary performance techniques and include creative exercises which are ideal for creating original pieces of performance.

Inspired by techniques employed by the National Theatre, Frantic Assembly, Complicite, Grotowski, Artaud, Derevo, Jacques Lecoq and more, these workshops explore the use of the body in performance with reference to dance, clowning, mime, mask and other non-verbal forms of theatre performance.

Working from the actor's perspective, the Shakespeare sessions explore performance techniques and can be tailored to any of the Bard’s plays.

Workshops may include: voice and speech techniques, characterisation gesture, movement and physicality, and how to read Shakespeare's direction to the actor through the text.

All of the workshops take place in studios around the West End with the majority of them being in the Covent Garden area.

There are also a few studios in the Victoria and Kings Cross areas to cater for school groups that are looking to do sessions based on Wicked, Billy Elliot, and The Railway Children.

There’s also the potential for a different location, or a residential workshop.
