Coming face-to-face with elephants, rhinos and dolphins were among the unforgettable experiences awaiting a group of Animal Management students in South Africa.

The Wetland Park Group offers packages in and around KwaZulu-Natal, including the UNESCO-listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park, with accommodation options such as the Amangwane camp, where a large portion of the profits goes to the local community. The Wetland team offers an extensive range of student activities from curriculum based trips to Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

The Kent students studying for their Extended Diploma in Animal Management also gained a direct insight into animal conservation issues and the threats facing many species.

The college’s animal care technician Eliz Thomas said: “For a number of years MidKent College has been running a residential trip to South Africa and the students are given a tailormade itinerary to suit their level and subjects of learning. The Wetland Park Group has provided our students with the most professional and knowledgeable staff to guide them. They have all displayed vast knowledge and passion for the environment, people and wildlife. Questions never go unanswered, and information and experiences are always greatly shared. They educate the students with most updated information on all subjects relating to animal management, and give them first-hand experience of working in the animal care industry.

“All learning needs are catered for by the guides and provide a safe and suitable learning environment, ensuring that all students are happy and comfortable, with their safety and enjoyment being top priority. Tales of their trip roam the corridors here at MidKent for many months, with the stories and information they have gathered shared out amongst the rest of the higher and lower level courses. They develop a sense of independence and passion for their future, and plan for their next adventure.

“The residential trip has now become a core subject to aid their learning. Many of the students decided to enrol on this particular course due to benefit they can gain from this.”
