War Horse tour offers World War One education

Date Posted: 03/08/2017

The National Theatre’s Production of War Horse will begin a UK tour on 15th September at Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury with educational resources  available for teachers

The tour coincides with the centenary commemorations of the end of World War One and follows the production’s sold-out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2013-2014.

The National Theatre provides schools and teachers with educational resources which can be used before and after watching War Horse and are suitable for Key Stage 2 and 3 classes.

Synopsis: War Horse

Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship, about a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War is the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history.  It features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.

Learning with War Horse

Downloadable and printable resources are available for teachers on the War Horse website which tackle various curriculum subjects such as English, Drama, Art and History.

Activities include mood boards and story mapping; topics that the resources cover include home life before the war and statues and war memorials.

Teachers should contact their chosen theatre for information of school ticket rates.
